Some of the PADI courses we offer…
Discover Scuba Diving
This is an introduction to scuba diving for the complete beginner. A session in the swimming pool followed by a shallow dive on a coral reef. You will enjoy the excitement of swimming and breathing under water in a pool, deep enough to experience the thrill of diving but with a shallow end start to give you confidence. You will then go on to complete a dive in water no deeper than 12 metres. At all times you will be under the close supervision of an internationally qualified instructor. You can experience the underwater world for the first time. This is not a certification course and the emphasis is on fun.
Open water
A course for the complete beginner which leads to you gaining an internationally recognized certification in diving – PADI Open Water Diver. This certification allows you to dive anywhere in the world; to rent or buy scuba equipment and is your first step to a whole series of exciting activities which take place underwater. This fun-packed course involves audio-visual presentations; pool lessons and 4 open water dives and is a great way for you to make new friends both below and above the water
Advanced Open water
The next step for the Open Water Diver is this fun filled programme of five dives to improve skill performance under the guidance of an instructor. When you think of underwater adventure, what ignites your imagination? Searching for and recovering lost objects perhaps, deep dives or underwater photography? All of this is possible on PADI’s Advanced Open Water programme.
Rescue Diver
Open to all Advanced Open Water divers with a current first aid certificate, this course enables divers to increase their confidence in self-rescue skills; to develop techniques for rescuing others and to learn how to manage emergency situations. This grade is a requirement for the prestigious certification of Master Scuba Diver and a prerequisite for the Dive master course.
Dive master
Open to all Rescue Divers with at least 20 logged dives this is the first professional grade. The dive master perfects his or her scuba skills and diving knowledge to instructor level; learns to control groups of divers and assist instructors during lessons. Certification as a dive master allows the diver to become a member of PADI and to receive the benefits of membership including the association magazine, “The Undersea Journal”.
The Emergency First Response course is a general first aid course, which will help to prepare you for any medical emergency and meets the requirements of the Rescue courses
Diving
Diving takes place in and around the Dar es Salaam Marine Reserve. The reserve includes the coral islands of Mbudya, Pangavini and Bongoyo. All dive sites are accessible within 25 minutes by boat.
There is a large range of good dive sites to suit all abilities. Dives such as Fern Wall on the Fungu Yasini Reef provide diving down to 40m. Lionfish are often found perched on fern coral protruding from the wall. Once up and over the wall, you are able to drift above fern reef at around 14m. Here you are able to see a variety of small reef fish playing around colorful coral.
There are also shallow dives such as Bongoyo patches which has a maximum depth of 12m. Here you are likely to find small moray eels and blue spotted stingrays gliding around sandy patches and hiding under rocks. Beautifully camouflaged Scorpion and Crocodile fish can also be spotted hidden amongst the coral.
Dives to 18m include The Pinnacle and Snapper Hill. The Pinnacle is a small coral bommy surrounded by underwater wildlife. Look out for the resident Angler and Leaf fish perched amongst the coral. Snapper Hill has varied terrain with column star and plate coral. It is a great place to spot lobsters in dark corners tucked under overhangs.
Rare species of fish are spotted on a regular basis, such as paper fish (or commonly called leaf fish), crocodile fish, scorpion fish, lion fish (at least four different species!), stonefish, stingrays, moray and snake eels. Then there is the excellent variety of nudibranchs that can be spotted, including the beautiful and amazing spanish dancers and many different starfish. These can all be found amongst small colourful tropical reef fish.
The population of fish is good, although not exceptional. The sites available to dive in Dar es Salaam do however provide you with the opportunity to see an excellent diversity of marine life. The pictures on this page provide a taste of what diving in Dar has to offer!
Equipment and Safety
Sea Breeze Marine Ltd. is extremely safety conscious. All diving equipment is well maintained and checked prior to each dive. All rental equipment comes with an Alternate air source (octopus) and Submersible pressure gauge (SPG). Cylinders are aluminium 9, 10 or 12 litre.
A stingray 6.3 metre rib with two 85 HP Yamaha motors, which can transport 10 divers comfortably to the various dive sites is used. The boat is equipped with an emergency oxygen unit, first aid kit, fish finder, GPS and mobile telephone.
Fortunately diving emergencies are rare due to proper dive planning but it is prudent to point out that the nearest Recompression chamber is in Mombasa. For your own piece of mind all divers should have medical cover in the unlikely event of requiring such medical treatment.
All guests are required to produce certification cards and log books when first booking a dive. Divers who cannot show a log book or have not been diving for a period longer than six months are required to complete a scuba review programme.
A qualified Instructor or Dive master leads all dives.
